AUTUMN VISIT - 6 SEPTEMBER 2014

SCAMPSTON WALLED GARDEN, NEAR MALTON

The gardens surround Scampston Hall which doesn't  open on Saturdays and was closed during our visit. The walled garden is very large and is within parkland designed by Capability Brown

We arrived just in time for the rain to start so apart from a few hardier souls, everyone made for the restaurant for tea and coffee. Fortunately the rain eased and then stopped allowing us to explore first the garden and then some of  the trails in the wider park

With the hot summer we have had this year the garden was more advanced than expected and many of the plants were somewhat past their best. The apples were ready and a little scrumping was rumoured.

Because of the earlier rain the grasses and seedheads looked very pretty with droplets of water on them.  The garden was redesigned by the designer Piet Oudolf in 1999.  There are many unusual plants and shrubs and we were all supplied with a plant identification  list and a map of the species in the Perennial Meadow.

In line with our tastes there was a lovely cafe and the sale of excellent quality plants.  If you missed this trip or wish to try a different time of year it is well worth putting on the 2015 To Do list.
