SUMMER EVENING VISIT - 15 JUNE 2005
COBBLE HEY GARDENS
Cobble Hey Gardens at Claughton-on-Brock near
Garstang were a real gem for our evening visit this
year. Situated on a remote farm deep in the Garstang
countryside, they're packed with unusual plants. The
gardens are tended mainly by the farmer’s wife – a
real enthusiast, very knowledgeable – she bakes
fantastic scones too! Over a period of eight years a part of this working farm has been transformed into a splendid country garden. Instead of grazing sheep we saw a garden alive with colour and containing a variety of interesting plants. As we walked around we passed rockeries, a cottage garden and a large pond surrounded by a Japanese garden including a gazebo and several stone features. With streams running throughout the garden a good selection of grasses and sedges flourish here. Although there is some surrounding woodland the
garden is open to the elements and, at c600ft above
sea-level, plants need to be hardy to survive. Views
from the various vantage points around the garden are
stunning as you would expect from a location near the
Forest of Bowland. |
